China to limit access to Nvidia’s H200 chips for its tech companies, according to The Information

Las Vegas.– The Chinese government has requested some of that country’s technology companies to stop ordering GPUs for Nvidia’s H200 artificial intelligence, as reported this Wednesday by the specialized media The Information, citing people familiar with the order, just when the American technology company said it had high requests for its product. The information arrives two days after the CEO of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, said that Chinese demand for the H200 processors that the company produces is “quite high.” The statements were made within the framework of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which is taking place this week in Las Vegas, after President Donald Trump lifted the ban on selling that technology to China in exchange for a percentage of sales.

“We have put our supply chain in motion and the H200s are already coming off the production line,” Huang said on Tuesday during a session with the media in remarks cited by the Wall Street Journal. “We are finalizing the details of the licenses with the US government,” added the technology leader, who this Tuesday was the first special guest of the presentation of Lenovo, the Chinese computer manufacturer, at CES.

China seeks to limit access to Nvidia’s H200 chips

The Chinese market presents itself as a great opportunity for Nvidia, considering that Huang had said that sales could generate $50 billion a year.

Last December, the British newspaper Financial Times (FT) reported that Beijing was preparing to limit access to Nvidia’s advanced H200 chips despite the decision of the US president to allow their export to the Asian giant.

Beijing regulators have been debating ways to allow “limited access” to the H200 to prevent their technology sector from being dependent on the United States and affecting internal development.

It is expected that buyers would likely have to go through an approval process, submitting applications to purchase the chips and explaining why Chinese suppliers could not meet their needs.

Nvidia has been treating the Chinese market with great caution amid the tariff battle unleashed by Trump, which has not allowed the sale of the most advanced chips for artificial intelligence at the moment.

Last December, the president stated that Nvidia could export its H200 chip to China as long as the company paid 25% of those sales to the US government.
