Claro closes a deal to acquire the majority stake in Brazilian company Desktop

São Paulo.- The telecommunications company Claro, owned by the Mexican group América Móvil, announced this Sunday the closing of an agreement to buy a majority stake in the Brazilian internet provider Desktop. The agreement involves acquiring 73% of Desktop’s shares for a value of 2.4 billion reais (approximately $450 million or €390 million), according to a statement from the company sent to the market. The closing of the transaction is subject to approval by the Brazilian competition authorities and the convening of an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting. Of course, controlled by the group of magnate Carlos Slim, it has almost 90 million mobile line customers in Brazil and is the leading company in fixed broadband services, with 19% of the market.

In addition, the company reported net revenues of 51.812 billion reais in 2025 (about $9.750 billion), 5.9% more than the previous year. Desktop, on the other hand, concentrates its presence in the state of São Paulo, the most populous in the country, where it has 58,000 kilometers of network and serves 4.8 million households in 200 cities. The internet service provider recorded a net profit of 80 million reais (about 15 million dollars) in 2025, 19% less than the previous year.
