Crisis in Honduras deepens, with almost no results three weeks after the elections

Three weeks after the general elections in Honduras, the results are still unknown, which increases uncertainty and this morning a confrontation has been recorded between militants of the conservative National Party and the ruling Liberty and Refoundation Party (Libre, left) on the outskirts of the special scrutiny electoral center, local media reported.

At least two of the activists were injured, one of them in the head.

The crisis has been exacerbated by the delay of the special scrutiny that was supposed to begin on the 13th of at least 2,792 records with inconsistencies.

The collection center for the electoral material is located in the state-owned National Institute for Professional Training (Infop), where at least 150 tables are ready for the scrutiny to begin, but as a result of the latest incidents, the accredited personnel of one of the shifts, of twelve hours each, has not been allowed to enter today to begin the vote count. By law, the National Electoral Council (CNE) has until December 30 to announce the results, but with the paralysis of the special scrutiny, the post-election situation could worsen even more if the results are not available before the deadline. If there were no results that day, the case would go to Parliament, whose president, a member of the Libre party, has not convened sessions since the end of August and in October installed a Permanent Commission, with broad powers, made up of only nine of the 128 deputies that make up that branch of the State. In the midst of the crisis, the Honduran president, Xiomara Castro, who on Tuesday denounced that a “coup” is brewing against her government, called for a rally this Wednesday in front of the Presidential House. “National Call Everyone! To the general public, youth, women, groups, social, popular and worker organizations. No to the coup d’état, no to the electoral coup, no to electoral fraud, no to Trump’s interference,” indicates the call made by the president. On Tuesday, the president of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Ana Paola Hall, denounced new problems to begin with the special scrutiny and assured that personnel from political parties are running over or pressuring the organization she presides over. “Will there be a better description of a kidnapping of the institutionality? In view and patience of all of us, we find ourselves diminished in our freedom, our officials cannot enter to perform their functions and the personnel sent to carry out the special scrutiny (personnel of the Political Parties) refuse to do their job and overwhelm (pressures, subdues) the CNE”, Hall indicated on the social network X. According to preliminary results from the CNE, Nasry ‘Tito’ Asfura, presidential candidate of the conservative National Party, who is supported by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, leads the vote with 40.54% of the votes. Salvador Nasralla, of the Liberal Party, also conservative, follows with 39.19%, while the candidate of the Liberty and Refoundation Party (Libre, left), Rixi Moncada, is relegated to third place with 19.29% of the votes, with 99.80% of the electoral records scrutinized.
