The scrutiny of the general elections in Honduras advanced slowly and kept the country in suspense. With just over half of the ballots processed, the two main candidates —Nasry Asfura, from the National Party, and Salvador Nasralla, from the Liberal Party— appeared virtually tied, separated by just a few hundred votes. Rixi Moncada, from the ruling Libre party, finished in a distant third place.
The election day on November 30th took place with high citizen participation and under the supervision of international organizations. Despite this, tensions arose: incidents were reported at some polling stations and the parties demanded greater transparency in the disclosure of results.
The political environment remains expectant. No candidate can declare themselves the winner until the CNE concludes the total scrutiny, and both the citizenry and observer organizations have called for calm while the official count progresses.
