Cuba revealed the identities of the 32 Cuban agents who died in the US attack in Venezuela

Havana.— The Cuban Government confirmed the death of 32 Cuban agents who were working in the security apparatus of the Venezuelan Government and who died during the attack carried out by the United States last Saturday, January 3, in Caracas, within the framework of the operation that led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. The Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR) described the deaths as a result of “a new criminal act of aggression and state terrorism” by the United States against Venezuela. According to the official statement, the deceased “lost their lives in combat actions and after fierce resistance.” The disclosed list includes high-ranking military and security personnel, including two colonels, a lieutenant colonel, four majors, captains, lieutenants, non-commissioned officers, and soldiers, aged between 26 and 67 years old. The agents belonged to both the Ministry of the Interior and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez paid tribute to the deceased in a message posted on X: “Honor and glory to our combatants, who heroically fell facing the criminal aggression and state terrorism of the U.S. Government against Venezuela. They shed their blood fulfilling their duty as revolutionaries and internationalists“.

Faced with the events, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel decreed two days of official mourning starting Monday. During that period, flags are flown at half-mast and most public events on the island were suspended. Díaz-Canel explained that the deceased Cubans “were fulfilling missions on behalf of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, at the request of homologous bodies” of Venezuela. He also detailed that they died “in direct combat against the attackers or as a result of the bombings of the facilities“.

Cuba-Venezuela Cooperation Under Scrutiny Cuba and Venezuela have maintained a broad cooperation agreement since 2000, which has allowed the presence of thousands of Cuban doctors, teachers, and specialists in Venezuelan territory. However, until now, neither government had officially recognized the participation of Cuban agents in intelligence or security tasks, a topic that for years was considered an “open secret”. The Venezuelan government has not disclosed the total number of casualties following the US military intervention, so it is unknown what proportion the 32 deceased Cubans represent. However, Venezuela’s Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, stated on Sunday that the foreign personnel “acted within the framework of cooperation between sovereign states and fulfilled tasks of protection and institutional defense.”
