Santo Domingo. – The Cuban ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Ángel Arzuaga Reyes, highlighted this Wednesday the historical ties between both countries and assured that his nation will never make decisions that harm the Dominican people, at a time when diplomatic tensions are increasing between Santo Domingo and Havana.
During an event held at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) for the centenary of the birth of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, the diplomat highlighted the lesson of maintaining friendship and unity between both peoples.
“With the Dominican Republic, this heroic people, we will always be together, we will always be united and we will never harm this people,” expressed Arzuaga Reyes.
His statements come after the Dominican Republic granted a seven-day deadline to nine officials of the Cuban embassy and their families to leave Dominican territory. The Cuban government has attributed the measure to alleged pressure from the United States, while Dominican authorities have not publicly reported the specific reasons for the ultimatum.

Prior to the start of the activity, the ambassador was approached by journalists regarding the diplomatic situation between both countries, but he avoided referring to the conflict. “Today is a day for celebration, not anything else”, he stated.
During the event, Arzuaga Reyes reiterated his defense of the Cuban Revolution and maintained that it has served as a reference for peoples he considers oppressed.

The diplomat also stated that Cuba has the solidarity of different peoples, including the Dominican one, and assured that the Caribbean nation will maintain its internationalist and humanist principles.
The statements come in a context of uncertainty regarding relations between the Dominican Republic and Cuba, following the measure adopted against officials of the Cuban diplomatic mission and Havana’s accusations of alleged U.S. intervention in the decision.
