Guatemalan Army reinforces security on the border with Honduras following a wave of violence

Guatemala City. – The Army of Guatemala reinforced security measures on the border with Honduras following the recent violent events recorded in Honduran territory, which left dozens dead and increased the alert in the Central American region. Guatemalan authorities deployed joint operations in rural areas and corridors identified as usual routes for illicit activities, expanding surveillance and security controls in the border departments of Izabal, Zacapa, and Chiquimula. The measure was adopted following several armed attacks in Honduras, including clashes linked to organized crime and anti-drug operations that left at least four police officers and one civilian dead in the border area of Corinto.

According to the National Civil Police (PNC) of Guatemala, the operations seek to prevent the entry of people linked to criminal structures and guarantee the security of border communities. The authorities warned that any suspect who enters Guatemalan territory illegally will be captured and placed at the disposal of the judiciary. The security reinforcement includes military patrols, specialized controls, and coordination between police and military forces, amid growing regional concern over the advance of drug trafficking and gangs. The border between Guatemala and Honduras is considered a strategic point for irregular transit and transnational crime activities, due to its extension and land connections between both countries. Guatemalan authorities assured that they will maintain surveillance operations permanently while the situation of violence in Honduras continues and reiterated their commitment to preserve security and order in the border areas.
