Haiti has recorded more than 5,500 cases of gender-based violence in the first half of this year, the majority being rapes of women and girls, the UN reported this Wednesday.
Immersed in a deep political, social, and economic crisis, Haiti suffers from the violence of powerful gangs that engage in committing murders, rapes, looting, and kidnappings.
Authorities recorded more than 1,000 cases of gender-based violence in June alone. UN spokesperson Farhan Haq warned of an “alarming increase” in these types of assaults.
Of the more than 5,500 sexual assaults recorded in the first half of this year, more than 3,000 took place between April and June, he stated.

The figures represent a proportional increase compared to last year, when just over 8,000 were recorded, Haq noted.
Around 70% of the sexual violence cases recorded in the first half of 2026 were rapes, many of these perpetrated by gangs of armed men.
