Finnish authorities have launched an investigation into a ship suspected of having caused damage to a telecommunications cable in the Gulf of Finland, as reported this Wednesday by the country’s president, Alexander Stubb.
According to official information, the incident affected a submarine cable connecting Helsinki with Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. The Finnish president indicated that the ship was inspected as part of the investigations to determine its possible responsibility for the damage recorded.
Stubb highlighted the joint work of the Police, the Border Guard and other institutions involved in the case, and assured that Finland has the capacity and preparation necessary to respond to situations that compromise its security and critical infrastructure.
Authorities took control of the ship linked to the investigation, while inquiries continue to clarify the circumstances of the incident and establish responsibilities. So far, no further details have been offered about the exact causes of the damage.
