International Editorial.- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported this Wednesday that Iran notified it of the impact on Tuesday night of a projectile in the grounds of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, in the south of the country, without damage to the facility or injuries among the staff.
The IAEA Director General, Rafael Grossi, reiterated his call for “maximum restraint” in the current conflict to avoid the risk of a nuclear accident, in a statement on X following the incident, at a time of increasing military escalation in the region.
The event occurs in the context of the intensification of hostilities between Iran and Israel, after Tehran launched missile attacks against Tel Aviv in retaliation for the death of Ali Lariyani, former speaker of the Iranian Parliament and advisor to the supreme leader, whom the Iranian authorities consider a “martyr”.
According to the IAEA, the impact on Bushehr did not affect critical systems nor did it cause radioactive leaks, which indicates that the plant’s safety is kept under control despite the proximity of military actions.
