Iran says it will not negotiate with the U.S. as long as it continues to breach the June memorandum

Tehran.- Iran reaffirmed this Sunday that it is not holding negotiations with the United States and that it is not willing to resume them as long as Washington continues to fail to comply with the memorandum of understanding reached in June.

“We do not have any negotiations with the United States right now,” stated Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in remarks to reporters, and asserted that, as long as “the violations of the memorandum of understanding by the United States do not end and Washington does not compensate for what it has failed to fulfill,” from his point of view “there is no possibility of resuming negotiations.”

Even so, Araghchi said that intermediaries “are still trying to find ways to engage in negotiations again,” as reported by the Tasnim agency.

The head of Iranian diplomacy also referred to the talks with Oman aimed at establishing a new maritime route, which are in their final phase.

The minister reiterated that said agreement between Tehran and Muscat would not, in itself, mean the reopening of Hormuz.

“This does not mean that the Strait of Hormuz will be opened. An agreement may be reached, but the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is conditional upon meeting a series of requirements,” he noted.

The minister explained that specialists are working on the layout of the new maritime routes and that the agreement with Oman will establish the paths that must be used once the necessary conditions for the reopening of the strait to traffic are met.

Iran’s six demands

This Saturday, the secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council, Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, presented a list of six demands that, he claimed, the United States must meet before Tehran proceeds to reopen maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Among them are the end of the naval blockade, the lifting of sanctions, the release of blocked Iranian assets, and the payment of war reparations.

The senior Iranian security official also demanded an end to threats against Iran, the cessation of military operations against the country and its regional allies in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and Iraq, as well as the withdrawal of U.S. military forces deployed around the Islamic Republic.
