JD Vance rules out releasing Iranian funds without verification of the nuclear program

Washington.- The Vice President of the United States, JD Vance, stated this Monday that Washington will not release frozen Iranian funds as part of the memorandum of understanding that seeks to end the conflict between both nations. Likewise, he reiterated that any sanctions relief will depend on Tehran taking verifiable measures to limit its nuclear program.

Vance explained that the preliminary agreement was signed digitally on Sunday, but clarified that it does not imply the immediate transfer of economic resources to Iran. As he indicated, the United States demands the elimination of highly enriched uranium stockpiles and the acceptance of international inspections to ensure that the country will not develop nuclear weapons.

The official also pointed out that Washington expects the Strait of Hormuz to remain open to international transit without the imposition of tolls or restrictions, a position supported by several European countries.

Despite the diplomatic progress, differences persist between both parties. While the United States insists on limiting the Iranian nuclear program before easing sanctions, Iran demands to maintain its right to uranium enrichment and access billions of dollars in frozen funds.

The official signing of the agreement is scheduled for next June 19 in Switzerland. Subsequently, both nations will begin a 60-day negotiation period to attempt to reach a definitive pact that resolves pending issues related to the nuclear program, economic sanctions, and verification mechanisms.
