Santo Domingo.- Dr. Jorge Asjana David assumed the Rectorship of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) this Thursday for the 2026-2030 period, with the commitment to promote a management focused on academic strengthening, institutional modernization, and the consolidation of the university as a strategic ally of the State for national development.
Asjana was sworn in during a ceremony held at the UASD Aula Magna, led by the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, and the outgoing rector, Editrudis Beltrán Crisóstomo, who administered the oath in accordance with the provisions of the institution’s Organic Statute.
During his inaugural address, the new rector assured that he will work to build “a stronger, more relevant, more inclusive, and more transcendent university,” based on unity, academic excellence, and institutional transformation.
Among the priorities of his administration, he presented seven strategic axes aimed at academic and faculty strengthening, pedagogical innovation, the ethical use of artificial intelligence, administrative modernization through the “Zero Paper” program, the decentralization of university campuses, the promotion of scientific research, and the internationalization of academic offerings.
In the area of student welfare, he announced the creation of a comprehensive scholarship system that will include the Work-Study Scholarship and Sports-Study Scholarship programs, in addition to the strengthening of services such as health, dining halls, residences, student transportation, and the relaunch of the Tony Barreiro Sports Games.

Asjana also reported that during his first 100 days in office, he will work on strengthening technological infrastructure, improving the teacher evaluation system, and consolidating the UASD Virtual platform to optimize teaching processes.
Likewise, he announced that he will promote the creation of a national commission to begin planning for the so-called “500-Year University,” with a view toward the fifth centenary of the founding of the First of the Americas, scheduled for the year 2038.

During the ceremony, the new vice-rectors were also sworn in: Rosel Fernández, for Teaching; Antonio Ciriaco Cruz, Administrative; Juana Encarnación, for Research and Postgraduate Studies; and Gerardo Roa Ogando, for Extension, in addition to the deans of the various faculties of the state academy.
