Santo Domingo.– The main political forces of the country, along with influential left-wing movements, have formed a broad alliance to support the candidacy of doctor Jorge Asjana David for the Rectorate for the period 2026-2030 of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).
This plural alignment marks a milestone in national academic life, bringing together traditionally opposing currents around a common vision for the management of the Primada de América. A doctor with a recognized career and
former vice-rector of teaching in two periods, Asjana David emerges as a figure of consensus capable of articulating institutional stability, dialogue and democratic strengthening within the academy.
Although historically the Executive Branch has kept its distance from university processes, prominent figures of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) have publicly expressed their support for the candidacy. Among them is former President Hipólito Mejía, considered one of the main political references of the ruling party.
Also, high-level leaders have joined, such as Franklin García Fermín, Minister of Higher Education and former rector of UASD; Roberto Fulcar, president of the National Strategy Commission of the PRM; Guido Gómez Mazara, president of
INDOTEL; and Adolfo Pérez, director of INABIE.
The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) formalized its support through its president, former president Danilo Medina, who assured that Asjana David’s academic proposal coincides with the principles and values of that organization. In this process, former rector Iván Grullón Fernández played a prominent role.
Similarly, sectors of the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) are actively integrating into the project, with the participation of leaders from its Political Directorate such as Raúl Hernández and Francisco Luciano, as well as a large team of academics who are part of the campaign structure.
The coalition expands with the unified support of left-wing movements, historically influential in the political and academic life of the UASD. Among the most significant endorsements is that of teacher María Teresa Cabrera Ulloa, president of the Frente Amplio Party and former presidential candidate, in a gesture that symbolizes a rare consensus of these currents around a single candidacy.
The sectors that support Dr. Jorge Asjana David agree that his academic profile, his administrative experience, and his institutional trajectory represent a guarantee of governability, consensus, and democratic strengthening, qualities considered essential to face the challenges facing the state university in the coming years.
