July 15, 1976. The remains of the Founding Fathers of the Nation, Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, and Matías Ramón Mella, were transferred to their final resting place in the Altar of the Fatherland mausoleum, built in Independence Park in Santo Domingo.
The solemn act was carried out as part of the commemorative activities for the centenary of the death of Juan Pablo Duarte and represented a permanent tribute to the founders of national independence. Since then, the Altar of the Fatherland became the country’s main civic monument and a place of tribute to the heroes who proclaimed the independence of the Dominican Republic on February 27, 1844.
