Santo Domingo.– The mayor of Los Alcarrizos, Junior Santos, announced that the new edition of the children’s community camp will begin on August 11 and will be aimed at boys and girls between 6 and 12 years old, with an estimated participation of nearly 3,000 minors from different sectors of the municipality.
Santos explained that the program seeks to offer children spaces for recreation, learning, and values-based training during the summer session, through educational, sports, and cultural activities.
“That camp started with the participation of 500 children and later grew to 1,000,” the mayor recalled, highlighting the initiative’s growth since its first editions.
During an interview on the radio program “Esto No Tiene Nombre”, on La Nota 95.7 FM, he indicated that the project has the support of the National Institute of Student Welfare (INABIE), the Ministry of Sports, and the Presidential Commission for Provincial Development, in addition to other collaborators who contribute to the organization and logistics.
Santos highlighted that the camp is not limited to recreational activities, but also includes guidance in fundamental areas for the integral development of the participants.
He explained that the program addresses topics such as personal hygiene, oral health, prevention of harmful substance use, environmental care, and integration activities.
“They are boys and girls from the most vulnerable sectors, literally from the alleys,” the mayor stated when referring to the profile of many of the participants.
Likewise, he highlighted that during the camp, the children participate in environmental protection days, which include planting trees, and receive academic support at the end of the activities.
“Each boy and girl is given their school kit with their notebook and their shoes, so that there are no excuses for them not being able to go to school,” he/she expressed.
The mayor pointed out that one of the program’s main achievements is that young people who participated in its first editions are now returning as community monitors.
“It was a satisfaction to see young people promoted as counselors. They are young people who were children at the camp,” he stated.
Santos explained that this process allows former participants to become facilitators and accompany new generations.

As part of the actions aimed at children and young people, the mayor reported that the Mayor’s Office promotes the practice of chess in different sectors of the municipality.
He explained that they have instructors distributed throughout the quadrants into which Los Alcarrizos is divided, with the purpose of using this discipline as a training tool.
“Chess is a tool that can compete with the cell phone,” he expressed, noting that this practice fosters concentration, discipline, and strategic thinking.
Finally, he indicated that he aspires for young people from Los Alcarrizos to be able to participate in national and international competitions as a result of this training process.
