Santo Domingo.– Sports Minister Kelvin Cruz stated that the inauguration of the new Banreservas Virgilio Travieso Soto Arena represents “a dream come true” for Dominican sports, highlighting the comprehensive transformation of the former Palace of Sports into a facility with international standards. The statements were made to De Último Minuto at the conclusion of the inaugural ceremony led by President Luis Abinader.

Cruz expressed that those who lived the history of the sports venue closely knew the deterioration it faced for years, which is why he assured that the remodeling marks a before and after for national sports. He attributed this transformation to the vision of President Luis Abinader, whom he recognized for promoting the modernization of the country’s sports infrastructure.

“Simply put, it is a dream come true. Those of us who participate in sports activities here used to look with great sadness at the state this facility was in. Today we are looking at a completely transformed arena, with top-tier technology, prepared to host world-class sporting and artistic events,” the official stated.

The minister highlighted that the new Arena Banreservas Virgilio Travieso Soto incorporates a 360-degree LED screen, a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, and a modern 1,200-ton air conditioning system. He recalled that previously it was necessary to rent air conditioning equipment to host large events, which represented a cost of over one million pesos per activity.

Likewise, Cruz maintained that this work reflects the transformation process that Dominican sports is experiencing and reiterated his commitment to continue promoting the construction and rehabilitation of sports facilities throughout the national territory, with the aim of bringing opportunities and development to the different communities.

In that sense, he took the opportunity to invite the population to support the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, which will be held next July. He indicated that the event will bring together delegations from 36 countries and around 6,000 athletes, becoming an international showcase for the Dominican Republic. “When Dominicans unite, we are invincible,” he concluded.
