“Justice is not fixed with technology alone; we need judges shielded from the pressures of power,” says the jurist.
Santo Domingo. – Lawyer María Mieses expressed today her deep concern about the current state of the Judiciary in the Dominican Republic, noting that the independence of judges runs the risk of becoming a “social media phrase” instead of an effective constitutional guarantee.
Despite the administrative advances recorded since 2019 under the management of magistrate Luis Henry Molina Peña, Mieses maintains that the efficiency in numbers and technological modernization are concealing a critical vulnerability in the system: the lack of real protection for judges against the sectors of power.
For Mieses, the current approach of the Judicial Council seems to be more focused on the perception of efficiency than on protecting the integrity of the judge.

“It is of no use for a system to be fast if judges continue to feel vulnerable to calls and pressure from the powerful,” said the jurist. “Technology cannot be a distraction from not addressing the usual problem, she indicated that the lack of guarantees for a judge to rule without fear of the consequences on their career or their position.”
Mieses emphasized that under the current leadership, political and economic pressures have not disappeared, but have become more subtle. He criticized the centralization of the system, which, in his opinion, leaves the magistrates unprotected.
The jurist concluded by calling on the judicial leadership to take responsibility for closing the doors to external influences.
“As long as the administrative image is prioritized over real independence, justice will continue to be seen as a tool for a few, leaving out the common citizen,” he stated.
