La Vega.– The Second Collegiate Court of La Vega sentenced Geovanny Miguel Carvajal Batista, known as “Jovani Ferreira”, to 20 years in prison after finding him guilty of attempting to take the life of a man, who was left paraplegic as a result of the injuries sustained during the attack.
The sentence establishes that the convicted person must serve the sentence at the El Pinito Correction and Rehabilitation Center (CCR) in La Vega. In addition, he was ordered to pay compensation of RD$2 million to the victim.
According to the indictment filed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the incident occurred on February 28, 2018, on Blanquito Espino Street, in the Villa Rosa sector, when Luis Miguel Capellán Taveras was in front of a relative’s home.
Investigations determined that Carvajal Batista arrived at the scene and, without saying a word, opened fire on the victim. Three of the shots struck different parts of his body, causing permanent injuries that resulted in paraplegia.
After committing the attack, the assailant fled the scene and remained at large until he was arrested on July 17, 2025, in compliance with a judicial warrant issued during the investigation.

The trial also established that the weapon used was illegal, as a certification from the Ministry of Interior and Police confirmed that the now-convicted individual did not possess a license to carry or own firearms.
During the trial, the Public Prosecutor’s Office presented documentary, expert, and illustrative evidence that supported the accusation of attempted homicide and illegal possession of a firearm, which were accepted by the judges at the time of issuing the conviction.
