Mayor Ulises Rodríguez launches the “Eco5RD Christmas Cleaning” operation in Santiago to reinforce waste collection in December
Santiago. – Mayor Ulises Rodríguez launched this Monday the program “Christmas Cleaning Eco5RD”, a special operation that increases the fleet of collection trucks and heavy equipment in Santiago, in order to guarantee a clean city during the Christmas festivities. The initiative, attached to the Presidency of the Republic, began simultaneously in Santiago and Puerto Plata, and will progressively extend to other provinces of the country.
The plan includes the use of additional collection units that will be touring the city throughout the day, as well as dump trucks, tipper trucks, and heavy machinery to comprehensively intervene in the different sectors of the municipality. Rodríguez highlighted that this day is part of a joint effort between the central government and the local government.
“The only way to solve a city’s problems is by working together, in coordination and unity,” said the mayor during the launch.
The municipal executive explained that the actions in Santiago are carried out in coordination with neighborhood councils, the business sector, commerce, industry, and various community development associations. He announced that in the coming days a schedule with garbage collection schedules will be presented, as part of a pilot plan coordinated with the Provincial Government and educational centers, to organize more efficient routes.
On his part, Carlos de Jesús Pellerano, director of the Eco5RD Executive Unit, indicated that the operation already operated in the South and East regions, and that this Monday it began in Santiago and Puerto Plata with the purpose of directly impacting the municipalities of the Cibao. He added that the so-called “Christmas Cleaning Route” integrates trucks decorated with festive motifs to promote citizen awareness about the proper management of waste during these dates.
Governor Rosa Santos valued the initiative and urged the population to take a responsible attitude towards waste management.
“We don’t do anything if it’s cleaned and then people throw trash again. We need everyone’s cooperation,” he emphasized.
The deputy mayor María Mercedes Moreno García, the regional director of the National Health Service, Bernardo Hilario, and various officials and collaborators of the City Council also participated in the event.
