MESCyT announces more than 4,000 scholarships and proposes a comprehensive transformation of the Dominican education system

Santiago.- The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCyT), Rafael Santos Badía, announced this Tuesday the expansion of the scholarship offer in the country, assuring that more than 4,000 students will be able to access new training opportunities, especially in humanities and strategic areas which, according to what he affirmed, are fundamental for the development of the Dominican Republic. During a meeting held in Santiago with representatives of the Association of Merchants and Industrialists of Santiago (ACIS), Santos Badía explained that the Government is promoting a proposal for a profound transformation of Dominican education, which seeks to restructure the current model to adapt it to the productive, social and international needs of the country. The official highlighted that, in addition to the increase in scholarships, the initiative contemplates the strengthening of priority careers and a structural review of the education system, including the possibility of moving towards a new Ministry of Education and a new educational model with international standards.

“We are going to have more than 4,000 scholarships, more careers and a greater commitment to humanities areas that are needed for the country’s development,” said the head of MESCyT, highlighting the importance of training professionals with a comprehensive vision. Santos Badía described the dialogue held with ACIS as “very interesting”, noting that the opportunity was seized to propose to the business guild its incorporation into the process of reform and transformation of Dominican education, as well as its support in the defense of this national initiative. In that sense, he reported that during the meeting a manifesto was approved unanimously, which will be discussed in federations, associations and provinces throughout the country, with the aim of building a consensual proposal that culminates in a grand national assembly, from where a transformative proposal on the future of the Dominican school will be presented to the country. The minister maintained that this proposal seeks to lay the foundations for an education more connected to the demands of the present, economic development, and international competitiveness, involving not only the State, but also the business sector and the different social sectors.

The initiative is part of a vision that seeks to reformulate the national education system from its foundations, at a time when various sectors are demanding a more modern, functional education aligned with the demands of the labor market and society.
