Lima.– Peruvian authorities reported 116 criminal incidents and the arrest of 72 people for alleged electoral crimes during the second round of the presidential elections held last Sunday, the country’s Public Prosecutor’s Office reported.
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the irregularities detected include cases of identity theft, document alteration, prohibited electoral propaganda, and other infractions related to the voting process. The authorities indicated that all complaints are being investigated in accordance with current legislation.
The election day took place amidst a tight race between leftist candidate Roberto Sánchez and right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori, whose difference in the tally remains at just a few thousand votes as the official count continues.

The Prosecutor’s Office stated that the incidents recorded do not compromise the general validity of the electoral process and highlighted the rapid intervention of prosecutors and security agencies to address the cases reported in different parts of the country.
Meanwhile, the country continues to await the final results of an election considered one of the closest in recent years, with thousands of records still under review and votes from abroad pending counting.
