Santo Domingo.– The Bicameral Commission in charge of studying the amendments to Law 74-25, which establishes the new Penal Code, will close the period for receiving observations and proposals from social sectors and citizens interested in the reform this Wednesday.
Opinions may be submitted until 6:00 p.m., before lawmakers enter the final analysis stage of the bill and begin preparing the report that will be sent to the National Congress.
After concluding the consultations, the commission will continue its internal review work and will have a period of 48 hours to prepare the document that will be presented to the Chamber of Deputies, at a time when Congress is seeking to approve the changes before the end of the current legislative session, set for July 26.
The commission formally began its work this Tuesday with the presence of the presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, Ricardo de los Santos and Alfredo Pacheco, who participated in the opening of the discussions.
The president of the commission, Deputy Wandy Batista, reported that during the first day, the congressmen managed to make progress in the review and consensus of seven articles of the initiative.
Batista explained that, although there is interest in concluding the process within the legislative calendar, no strict deadline has been set to finish the debates and that the work could be extended until the review of the project is completed.

The legislator also downplayed warnings about possible unconstitutionality actions against the reform and assured that the analysis is being carried out under legal and constitutional criteria.
“We are not worried about the constitutional actions that, in the exercise of their right, any citizen or institution may file,” stated Batista, while defending the work carried out by the commission.
The revision of the Penal Code comes after the Executive Branch presented a proposal to modify 18 articles of Law 74-25, following the receipt of questions and observations from various sectors.
In accordance with the established schedule, the new regulation is scheduled to come into effect on August 3rd.
