Los Angeles.- The video game company PlayStation announced this Wednesday that it will stop producing disc versions of new titles for its consoles starting in January 2028.

From that date on, new video games will be available on Sony’s official digital store, PlayStation Store, and in physical stores only in digital format, the company reported in a blog post.

Sony also specified that the measure will not affect physical format games sold before that date.

According to the document, this change occurs as a “natural evolution” of Sony Interactive Entertainment, the company behind PlayStation, in its quest to adapt to consumer trends, ensuring that the preference for digital media far outweighs that of physical discs.

“This transition will allow us to better align with how the majority of our community prefers to access and play video games today,” the statement reads.

The decision also comes in a context of changes for the industry, marked by the rising cost of consoles due to, among other factors, the growing demand for memory and storage chips by artificial intelligence (AI) companies.
