President of Suriname makes official visits to Brazil and Dominican Republic

San Juan.- The President of Suriname, Jennifer Greelings-Simons, expressed optimism this Tuesday regarding her imminent official visits to Brazil and the Dominican Republic, countries with which she seeks to expand cooperation.

Greelings-Simons, who begins his journey tomorrow, Wednesday, heads a large delegation that includes government ministers and representatives from the private sector. The president told the press that the visit to Brazil will focus mainly on socioeconomic opportunities, including cooperation in defense, aviation, trade, and the agricultural sector. Added that, in the course of the visit, he intends to evaluate the possibility of a shorter maritime route between Suriname and Brazil that allows for the transport of goods more quickly and economically.

“Through this route, we are also working to seize the opportunity Suriname has to export rice to Mercosur. We have been preparing for a whole month to make these advances a reality. Brazil is our great southern neighbor and, for various reasons, very important to Suriname,” stated the Head of State. Regarding aviation, that will be another central topic in the conversations with his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with the aim of improving connections and obtaining possible support for the Surinam Aviation Company (SLM). Following his visit to Brazil, Greelings-Simons will travel to the Dominican Republic for a visit that will focus on cooperation in the tourism sector, before returning to Suriname on June 2. EFE
