Santiago.– The president of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) in the municipality of Santiago, Andrés Cueto, defended this Thursday the right of businessman and communicator Santiago Matías to run for the Presidency of the Republic, asserting that the Constitution guarantees this possibility to every citizen who meets the legal requirements.
Cueto stated that a potential candidacy for Matías reflects the openness of the Dominican democratic system and the possibility for new figures to participate in the country’s political life.
When referring to Santiago Matías’ statements regarding a possible presidential candidacy, the political leader cited Article 123 of the Constitution, which establishes the conditions for running for head of state, and highlighted that a person’s origin or profession does not represent an impediment to presenting a candidacy.
“That a young man like Santiago Matías can aspire to the Presidency speaks very well of our democracy. In the Dominican Republic, it does not matter where you come from, but that you meet the constitutional requirements,” he expressed.
The ruling party leader explained that the Constitution establishes as requirements being Dominican by birth or origin, having reached 30 years of age, being in full exercise of civil and political rights, and not having belonged to military or police service during the three years prior to the elections.
Cueto maintained that the incorporation of new figures into the political scene strengthens democracy, promotes the plurality of ideas, and expands the options for citizens.
