Puerto Rico records 732 violent deaths in 2025 and an average of 61 deaths per month

San Juan.– The Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics reported this Friday that the country registered 732 violent deaths in 2025, with an average of 61 deaths each month. According to the Puerto Rico Violent Death Reporting System (PRVDRS), attached to the Institute, the months with the highest incidence were January, with 74 deaths; June with 77 and August with 71, which represents that deaths were reported on 83% of the days of the year. These 732 deaths were broken down with 471 murders, that is 64.3%, 204 suicides representing 27.9%, and deaths due to other circumstances, in 57 cases, which is equivalent to 7.8%. Puerto Rico has one of the highest homicide rates among U.S. jurisdictions. In 2025, more than 471 murders were recorded, most of them due to settling of scores linked to drug trafficking.

Of these homicides, 93% of the victims were men between 20 and 39 years old, carried out with firearms. Regarding suicides, 55.6% occurred in people aged 40 to 59, showing an increase compared to previous years. The police areas of San Juan and Caguas, in northern Puerto Rico, and Guayama, in the south, presented the highest rates of violent deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
