Reggie Bannister, actor, musician, and one of the most remembered figures from the Phantasm horror saga, has died at the age of 80. The news was confirmed by director Don Coscarelli and by the franchise’s official site, which reported that the performer passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2026.
His wife, Gigi Bannister, told TMZ that the actor died during the early hours of the morning at the cabin they shared in Crestline, California, in the San Bernardino County mountains. According to her account, Bannister was happy to be home and died peacefully, accompanied during the final stage of his life.
Born in Long Beach, California, in 1945, Bannister began his artistic career in music. He was part of The Greenwood County Singers and later served in the Vietnam War. After returning, he resumed musical projects and found a new professional path in front of the cameras alongside filmmaker Don Coscarelli.

So far, the family has not reported an official cause of death. TMZ noted, based on statements from Gigi Bannister, that the actor was facing Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Months earlier, a support campaign organized to cover his medical care explained that he remained under hospice care at home and required permanent assistance.
Dread Central also reported that Bannister was dealing with dementia and Parkinson’s before his passing. Those diagnoses are part of his known medical history, although none of the sources consulted state that one of those diseases was, by itself, the direct cause of his death.
In addition to Phantasm, Bannister appeared in productions such as Survival Quest, Bubba Ho-Tep, and various independent films. He also kept his musical side active and worked alongside his wife at Production Magic Inc., a company dedicated to film, music, and event projects.
Don Coscarelli said goodbye to him as a friend and collaborator of decades. Bannister leaves behind his wife Gigi and his daughter Ellen. His family is preparing private memorial services and, subsequently, a public celebration for followers and close musicians in different countries following his death.
