Santo Domingo.– One year and three months after the Jet Set tragedy, relatives of the victims reported that the psychological, social, and economic support they were receiving from State institutions has disappeared, leaving dozens of children who lost their parents abandoned.
During a meeting with the press, Renberto Durán, a relative of the victims, lamented that the authorities have ceased the support they offered in the first months following the tragedy.
“Last year, during the holidays, all the institutions and agencies were calling us to offer camps and psychiatric and psychological help. This year we haven’t received a single call from a State agency to support us,” he/she expressed.
Durán stated that the reality for families has not changed and that many minors continue to face the emotional aftermath of having lost their parents.
“Today we continue with children without a mother and without a father. Only those of us who live it know the pain we are suffering. However, the State has completely forgotten about us. No one calls us, no one offers us the emotional, economic, and social support we need. We are helpless and exposed before the Dominican State,” he/she denounced.

At the same meeting, Luis Custodio, representative of the Jet Set Movement and who lost his brother, his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Maldonado, and his father-in-law, Dr. José Ovidio Maldonado, reported that the families remain waiting for the date to be set for the start of the trial on the merits.
Custodio explained that the judicial process has been emotionally draining and that each hearing relives the pain of that night.
“Every 8th of the month, every hearing, and every time we have to address this issue, the wound is reopened. All we ask is that the court objectively considers the evidence presented by the Public Prosecutor’s Office. We are not seeking revenge; we are seeking justice,” they stated.

Likewise, he announced that in the coming days the Jet Set Movement will hold a press conference to present the next actions it will carry out with the aim of keeping the public informed about the progress of the judicial process and continuing to support the families affected by one of the most painful tragedies recorded in the country.
