Santiago.– Within the framework of the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the passing of the founding father Juan Pablo Duarte, the governor of Santiago, Rosa Santos, called on Dominicans this Wednesday to strengthen patriotic values and preserve the legacy of freedom, sovereignty, and commitment to the nation left by the founder of the Dominican Republic.
The event, held simultaneously throughout the country and led by civil and military authorities, included a mass at the Santiago Apóstol Cathedral, followed by a solemn ceremony with military honors, the raising of the National Flag, floral offerings, and the reading of the order of the day in honor of the Father of the Nation.
During his speech, Santos highlighted that this is the first occasion, since he assumed the Provincial Governorship, that an official tribute has been held for the date of Duarte’s passing, an initiative that, he stated, seeks to turn this recognition into a national tradition.
“Just as we commemorate February 27th and March 30th, we must also remember the passing of the one who left us the greatest legacy of freedom and sovereignty. This tribute must become a custom so that new generations keep the memory of our heroes alive,” he expressed.
The representative of the Executive Branch highlighted the sacrifice made by Duarte by renouncing a comfortable life abroad to return to the country and dedicate his existence to the struggle for national independence.

“Juan Pablo Duarte could have remained outside the country, but he chose to return to build a free and independent nation. That example should inspire us to defend the values that sustain our democracy and our development today,” he stated.

Likewise, he urged the citizenry to confront social indifference and work for a Dominican Republic founded on patriotism, solidarity, and respect for the principles that gave rise to the nation.

The ceremony featured the participation of representatives from the Second Infantry Brigade of the Dominican Republic Army, the Northern Joint Command, government authorities, students, and members of various public and private institutions, who paid tribute to the Father of the Nation during a day of reflection on his historical legacy.
