Santo Domingo.- Amidst intense debates, the Senate of the Republic approved in two consecutive readings this Wednesday the bill that introduces modifications to the new Penal Code.
The initiative, which was declared urgent, had 25 votes in favor and 3 against.
During the session, opposition legislators presented proposals for amendments to the piece, which were rejected. One of them was that of the representative of the National District in the upper house, Omar Fernández, to strengthen freedom of expression, as well as to toughen sanctions against celebratory gunfire when it causes permanent injury or the death of a person.
The proposals were rejected by a majority of 21 senators, who voted against the modifications submitted by the Fuerza del Pueblo legislator.
Meanwhile, ruling party congressmen defended the Code, however, not everyone was satisfied with voting in favor. Ginette Bournigal, at the end of her turn to speak, highlighted that “she was going to vote, but not very happily, because she does not like being conditioned.”

Among the approved changes are adjustments regarding corporate criminal liability, harassment, digital crimes, victim protection, and aspects related to freedom of expression.
Following its approval in Congress, the initiative will be sent to the Executive Branch for the corresponding purposes, before the new Penal Code enters into force on August 3rd.
