The Pope urges an end to antisemitic violence after the “terrorist massacre” in Sydney

Pope Leo XIV urged this Monday to end antisemitic violence in relation to the “terrorist massacre” that occurred yesterday in Sydney against the Jewish community, which caused at least 16 deaths.

“Let us pray for those who suffer because of war and violence; in particular, today I wish to commend to the Lord the victims of the terrorist massacre that occurred yesterday in Sydney against the Jewish community,” he affirmed in an audience with the donors of the Nativity Scene of the Paul VI Hall and of the Tree and the Nativity Scene of St. Peter’s Square. And he added: “Enough of these forms of antisemitic violence! We must eliminate hatred from our hearts.”

The attack, which occurred in a park near a popular Sydney beach during a celebration of the Jewish community, left 14 dead at the scene, including one of the attackers, and two other people died later in the hospital. In addition, at least 42 people were injured, seven of them in critical condition. “Dear brothers and sisters, the Nativity Scene and the Tree are signs of faith and hope; as we contemplate them in our homes, in the parishes and in the squares, we ask the Lord to renew in us the gift of peace and fraternity,” concluded the Pope.
