Santo Domingo.– The United States Embassy in the Dominican Republic announced that the country has been selected to participate in a pilot program through which some immigrant visa applicants will be required to post a financial bond as part of the consular evaluation process.

The diplomatic mission explained that the initiative is part of a U.S. Department of State plan to strengthen and evaluate security procedures for visa issuance at various consular representations around the world.

According to the Embassy, the choice of the Dominican Republic is due to the high volume of immigrant visa applications processed in the country. The Consular Section in Santo Domingo is among the most active worldwide for this type of process, making it a key setting for the implementation of the project.

The financial guarantee will be required only for certain applicants who are selected within the pilot program, so the measure will not apply generally to all persons applying for a residence visa.

U.S. authorities indicated that the purpose of this bond is to provide a guarantee that the beneficiary will not become a public charge to the United States government, as part of the immigration evaluation criteria.

The Embassy specified that the Department of State will continue to monitor the results of this initiative to determine its effectiveness and evaluate its potential application at other consular offices.
