The United States government granted permanent residency to Eduardo Bolsonaro under the EB-1A category, intended for applicants recognized for their extraordinary abilities. The process, which began more than a year ago, concluded this month and allowed the former congressman to obtain a “green card,” with the right to live and work legally in U.S. territory.
Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, explained that he turned to the United States in search of protection from what he describes as judicial persecution driven by the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court.
In June, the Brazilian justice system sentenced Eduardo Bolsonaro to four years and two months in prison and eight years of disqualification from holding public office after finding him guilty of requesting U.S. intervention in the proceedings against his father, who is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for attempting to overturn the results of the 2022 elections.

The former deputy admitted that the residency application coincided with the progress of the judicial case in Brazil. He stated that he initially traveled to the United States with the intention of staying for only a few days, but decided to settle indefinitely, considering that the political and judicial context in his country forced him into exile.
“I can only thank the Trump administration for their consideration. I followed the process, met the requirements, and now the result has arrived. I came to the United States with the intention of spending only a few days and ended up having to go into exile due to persecution in Brazil,” Eduardo Bolsonaro had declared to the media Metrópoles.
Furthermore, he stated that the rulings of Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who is in charge of the case at the Supreme Federal Court, have no effect outside of Brazil.

Bolsonaro, who had held the position of clerk at the Angra dos Reis police station since 2010, was preventively removed in February, shortly after losing his seat as a federal deputy due to the accumulation of unjustified absences.
In his new status as a permanent resident of the United States, Eduardo Bolsonaro stated that he would only consider returning to Brazil if the judicial convictions against him are overturned.
