Washington.- U.S. President Donald Trump promised again this Wednesday a $5,000 payment for every American adult if Republicans maintain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate in the November elections, a proposal he linked once again to revenue generated through tariffs.
“If Republicans win the House and the Senate, I will issue what we will all from now on call the Trump dividend: every adult in the United States will receive $5,000,” Trump said during a rally in North Carolina.
“And we can do it, and the Democrats can’t say that, because they don’t impose tariffs,” added the president, who assured that the United States is collecting “a lot of money” thanks to his trade policy.
Trump had already announced last week, during the Republican convention held in Dallas, that he would deliver that “Trump dividend” if his party retains both houses of Congress.
Then he asserted that the money would have to be spent within the United States, but he did not explain how it would be financed or how it would be distributed.

The proposal has raised doubts even among Republican lawmakers. Senate Republican Leader John Thune stated that Congress would have a role in its eventual approval, while House Speaker Mike Johnson said the payment would require legislative authorization.
The cost of delivering $5,000 to every American adult could exceed one trillion dollars.
US media and analysts have also pointed out that current tariff revenues would not be enough on their own to fund a disbursement of that size and that Trump had previously proposed other tariff-funded “dividends” that did not materialize.
