Donald Trump will remove 29 career diplomats from their ambassadorial posts and other positions, in an attempt to deepen the American foreign policy stance with personnel fully aligned with the ‘America First’ agenda of his Republican Administration.
Mission chiefs in at least 29 countries were notified last week that their mandates will expire in January 2026 and will not be renewed, according to two State Department officials who spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.
The affected diplomats assumed their roles during Joe Biden’s presidency and had survived the initial purge of the first months after Trump’s return to the White House. The officials will not lose their positions in the foreign service, but will return to Washington to perform other functions if they wish, the sources added.
