Santo Domingo.- Although the Central Electoral Commission of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) reported that the official results of the elections to choose the next rector and other authorities could be known this Thursday, professors and voters assured that the preliminary trends would allow the winner to be identified as early as Wednesday night.
Central Electoral Commission member Fran Valdés López explained that the body must await the receipt and validation of the minutes from the country’s faculties, campuses, and university centers before issuing definitive results.
However, professor Virgilio Pérez Fernández stated that the projections handled by different university sectors point to a defined trend in the race for the Rectorship.
“It always happens that the projection holds. What has been seen is that as far as the Rectory is concerned, the rector is decided in the first round and today it will be known, even if the official preliminaries come later,” he expressed.
Other voters agreed that, although the official proclamation corresponds to the Electoral Commission, campaign teams usually know the trends hours in advance thanks to the information collected by their delegates at the various polling stations.

Professor Robert Benjamín Hernández stated that the reports received during the afternoon reflected a significant lead for one of the candidates and maintained that the landscape could be practically defined before the polls close.

“It is customary here that at eight-thirty or so the losing candidate goes and congratulates the winning candidate because we all have our information centers and we know who won,” he stated.
Hernández also revealed that, according to information handled by some electoral teams, in several regional centers they were waiting until the last minutes of the day to complete the voting.
“There are six centers where one voter or very few voters are missing and they have waited until the last minute. What is being said is that they are seeking to prevent a definitive trend from being projected before closing,” he maintained.
However, he clarified that those pending votes would hardly alter the general behavior observed during the election day.
The Central Electoral Commission reported that the voting concluded at 8:00 p.m. and that the data received will be projected progressively on a screen installed in front of the agency, while the process of validating the minutes continues, which will allow the official results of the university elections to be issued.
