Santo Domingo.– From the Women’s Correction and Rehabilitation Center of Anamuya, in Higüey, the young Yokairy Julianny Sosa Asencio, 24 years old, formally requested a review of her judicial case, after serving a 12-year prison sentence for a robbery she claims not to have committed.
Through a handwritten letter addressed to the Attorney General of the Republic, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, Sosa Asencio states that her identity had been improperly used on social media, which, according to her, led to her erroneous association with the criminal act.
In the document, the young woman denounces that the most painful thing about her situation is that the person responsible for the crime would have declared in hearings and before the court that he does not know her and that she had no involvement, and yet she remains deprived of her liberty.
“I have no one else to knock on the door,” he expresses in the letter, in which he asks that his file be reviewed objectively and “without prejudice,” in order to correct what he considers a serious judicial error.
“I don’t ask for pity; I ask for the truth to be sought,” concludes the young woman, signing the letter “with respect and hope.”
Yokairy Sosa’s request reopens the debate on the review of convictions and the need to guarantee fair judicial processes, especially in cases where failures in the identification and evaluation of evidence are alleged.
