Santo Domingo.– The Sixth Instruction Court of the National District, based in Ciudad Nueva, issued this Friday an order to open a trial on the merits against all the defendants in the so-called Chameleon case, including Hugo Beras, Jochi Gómez, and the other accused individuals linked to the process.
The decision was adopted by Judge Yanibet Rivas, who accepted part of the legal qualification presented by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, maintaining charges such as sabotage, identity theft, criminal association, and embezzlement. However, the court excluded the terrorism charge that appeared in the initial indictment.
During the preliminary hearing, the Public Prosecutor’s Office requested that the court send all the accused to trial, considering that there is sufficient evidence for the charges to be debated in a full trial.
According to the prosecuting body, the investigations allowed for the collection of evidence regarding the alleged commission of various illicit activities, including administrative corruption, fraud in public procurement, fraud against the State, and other crimes related to the management of public resources.
According to the accusatory file, the alleged irregularities were reportedly carried out mainly through the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) and the Ministry of Defense, institutions from which the operations under investigation were allegedly conducted.

Likewise, it was highlighted that those involved allegedly handled more than 1.5 billion pesos through presumably fraudulent contracts, resources that are part of the facts being investigated by the authorities.

The process enters a new judicial stage, in which a trial court must examine the evidence presented by the parties and determine the criminal liability of the defendants.
