Deploying more than 48,000 people in a preventive operation for Christmas

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic launched this Tuesday a large-scale operation for the Christmas holidays, involving more than 48,000 people, with the aim of preventing incidents and traffic accidents, one of the main causes of death in this country.

The first stage of the operation will last until six in the morning on December 25, according to what was explained by the Emergency Operations Center (COE), which will redeploy similar actions for the end of the year.

The organization indicated that it will establish a prevention and safety device on the main roads of the country to prevent traffic accidents, alcohol and food poisoning. Medical personnel, military personnel, police officers, search and rescue specialists, and volunteers will be part of the relief operation. They will be located at points where a greater number of incidents have been detected in the last operations, the COE specified in a statement. A total of 42 people died in traffic accidents in the Dominican Republic during the Christmas and New Year’s festivities of 2024, when around 7,700,000 people traveled on the different highways and roads of the country, according to data from the COE. According to the World Health Organization, the Dominican Republic ranks fifth worldwide in traffic accidents.
