Nurses paralyze hospitals in Cibao demanding better working conditions

Santiago, R.D. – Dozens of nurses from various provinces of the Cibao stopped their work this Monday during an eight-hour protest, demanding better working conditions and the fulfillment of agreements previously signed with the Ministry of Public Health and the National Health Service (SNS). The demonstration, carried out peacefully, was led by nursing sector organizations, who are demanding the payment of seniority incentives, the reclassification of staff, and the appointment of assistants who have been trained as nursing graduates, among other claims.

Ramón Rodríguez, secretary of the National Nursing Workers Union (Sinatrae), explained that the paralysis seeks to draw the attention of the authorities to the official silence in the face of the sector’s claims.
“We ask that they listen to our demands, which seek not only to improve the quality of life of nursing staff, but also the services offered to citizens,” he said. Rodríguez warned that if they do not receive answers in the coming days, they could intensify the protests with staggered stoppages throughout the region. The protest day was called by several entities, including: Sinatrae, the National Union of Dominican Nursing Services (Unased), the Dominican Association of Nursing and Health (Adeiss), the National Confederation of Nurses and Health Workers (Conaendilag) and the National Association of Nursing (Asonae). The paralysis affects health services in public hospitals in Santiago, Espaillat, Valverde, Puerto Plata, Monte Cristi and other provinces of the Cibao.
