Santo Domingo.– The Emergency Operations Center (COE) reported this Wednesday that the suspension of teaching and public and private work is maintained in the provinces that remain under red alert due to the effects caused by tropical storm Melissa, which continues to affect the Dominican territory.
During a press conference led by President Luis Abinader, the director of the COE, General Juan Manuel Méndez, explained that they maintain nine provinces are on red alert, including the National District, thirteen on yellow and three on green.
Méndez also said that heavy rains are expected to intensify this Thursday and continue through Friday.
From his side, President Abinader reaffirmed that the government’s objective with these preventive measures is to “save lives”, while stating that regarding the country’s dams, only the one in Sabaneta, in the province of San Juan, is being given special monitoring.
This way, the provinces on red alert are: Barahona, San Cristóbal, Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, San José de Ocoa, San Juan, Azua, Peravia and Pedernales, the COE indicated in a statement.
On the other hand, the following are under yellow alert: La Vega, La Romana, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, Samaná, San Pedro de Macorís, Monseñor Nouel, Sánchez Ramírez, La Altagracia, Elías Piña, Monte Plata, Independencia and Bahoruco.
Furthermore, due to Melissa, which continues to move west/northwest at about 4 km/h and is expected to advance slowly, María Trinidad Sánchez, Santiago and Duarte are in green.
