Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) described this Wednesday as “unusual” the government’s decision to authorize the import of chicken to address the shortage and high price of the product, when that situation could have been avoided with “adequate” planning of national production.

According to the opposition organization, the wrong policies have caused a reduction in the number of breeders, especially those who supply the lower-income sectors, which has aggravated the shortage and price increases. “Since October, we warned that it was essential to schedule monthly production to ensure supply and stabilize prices. The Government ignored those warnings and is now resorting to imports,” added the PLD. The party rejected the argument of a supposed seasonal lag, explaining that the chickens consumed in December do not correspond to the production of January, so attributing the crisis to circumstantial factors lacks technical support. The training warned that resorting to the importation of chicken demonstrates a policy that favors harmful imports, harms national producers, weakens the rural economy, and hits the pockets of consumers, who end up paying more for a basic food item in the family basket.
