The G7 will maintain “economic pressure” until Moscow ends the war in Ukraine
Toronto, Canada.- G7 foreign ministers reaffirmed their intention to “maintain economic and financial pressure on Moscow” until it ends the invasion of Ukraine during a virtual meeting held this Monday with their Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha.
Canada’s Foreign Minister, Anita Anand, chair of the G7 ministerial group, noted in a statement that attendees appreciated “the diplomatic efforts of the United States, under the leadership of President (Donald) Trump, which open the possibility of a peaceful and lasting end to the war”.
In the meeting, which was also attended by the High Representative of the European Union (EU), Kaja Kallas, it was also noted “the willingness of Europe, Canada and other partners to provide Ukraine with solid and credible security guarantees in coordination with the United States”.
Another of the topics discussed was the “territorial integrity of Ukraine”, its political independence and the handover of prisoners of war, civilians and Ukrainian children held by the Russian authorities.
“The participants expressed their support for continued dialogue and substantive, good-faith negotiations with significant results between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing that peace can only be consolidated when both parties reach a just, equitable, and sustainable solution,” the statement concluded.
