Madonna received seven awards at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, but one of her appearances on stage sparked concern among part of the audience. The artist seemed not to remember precisely why she had gone up to accept one of the awards.
The singer shared the stage with Charli XCX and Troye Sivan upon receiving the award for Best Dance for Confessions II – The Film. The moment led to jokes, a question about the category, and comments that some viewers found baffling.
The sequence occurred when Madonna took the microphone and said: “First I want to get this out of my butt. It’s been there all night.” She then reached a hand toward the back of her outfit and exclaimed: “My microphone is too short!”.
The 68-year-old artist brought her two colleagues closer and delivered another phrase that marked the ceremony: “There is safety in numbers. I’m not very clear on why this award is. I suppose it’s for the short film.”
Charli XCX then opened the card with the announcement to remind her of the category. Madonna continued with a thank you directed at both musicians and asked if they had understood the joke about “the laser” she had been wearing throughout the night.
The singer closed her speech with a reflection on the role of dance in her artistic life. “Dance is where everything happened for me in life,” she stated before inviting the audience to stand up.
“If you like to dance, get up. We are all equal on the dance floor,” the performer added before leaving the stage.
The shared award was part of a night of recognition for Madonna. The ceremony represented her first win at the MTV Video Music Awards since 1999.
The artist also won the award for Best Collaboration alongside Sabrina Carpenter. The duo prevailed over nominees such as Clipse, Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T, and Malice for Chains & Whips, as well as Shakira and Burna Boy for Dai Dai.
When explaining how that joint work came to be, Madonna said that she took the initiative to contact Carpenter. The singer admitted that she is impatient and recounted that five days passed without receiving a response.
“I sent her a DM”, Madonna revealed during her acceptance speech. Carpenter responded and, within a week, both were already working in the studio.
Before the awards ceremony, Madonna returned to the VMA stage 23 years after her memorable kiss with Britney Spears at the 2003 ceremony. For her appearance, she wore a Saint Laurent ensemble designed by Anthony Vaccarello: a black satin trench coat, a red leotard, and knee-high boots.
The singer performed Bring Your Love alongside Carpenter and later joined Charli XCX for a version of Danceteria Afterhours Remix. The staging included dancers, laser beams, suggestive imagery, and appearances by Debi Mazar, Seth Rogen, and Sombr. Madonna began seated on a piano played by Carpenter and was then moved across the stage to a platform.
The broadcast was delayed because an American football game ran longer than expected, which caused part of the television audience to miss the beginning of the presentation or question the camera coverage.
