7-magnitude earthquake shakes islands south of Tokyo with no tsunami warning

A magnitude 7 earthquake shook the Ogasawara Islands this Sunday, an archipelago located in the Pacific Ocean, about 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo, with Japanese authorities not issuing a tsunami warning.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake occurred at 11:10 a.m. local time, with its epicenter at a depth of about 470 kilometers in waters west of the archipelago.
The shaking reached level 3 on the Japanese seismic scale, which has seven levels, on the islands of Chichijima and Hahajima. The tremor was also felt in Tokyo and other areas of eastern and northeastern Japan.
Authorities had not reported any damage or casualties following the earthquake. The JMA indicated that there was no risk of a tsunami as a result of the seismic movement.
Japan is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of intense seismic and volcanic activity where earthquakes occur frequently. For this reason, the country has building codes and prevention systems aimed at reducing the risks associated with these phenomena.
