A man whom social media users claim is Dominican has gone viral after being caught on video allegedly stealing mail from a U.S. Postal Service (USPS) mailbox in Upper Manhattan using the method known as “mail fishing,” in which a strip of fabric or similar object is used to pull letters and checks from inside a mailbox.
The video shows the suspect removing several envelopes, placing some inside his scooter and others in his pocket before leaving the scene. Online users claim the same individual has appeared in similar videos since 2025 and identify him as being from the Dominican Republic.
However, the NYPD has not confirmed the suspect’s identity or immigration status, and no charges have been announced. Mail theft is a federal crime in the United States and can carry penalties of up to five years in prison.
