U.S. Postal Service employee accused of stealing over $25,000 in rent payments sent by mail

NEW YORK.– A United States Postal Service (USPS) employee was charged by federal authorities with stealing more than $25,000 in rent payments sent by mail, in a fraud case that allegedly affected landlords and tenants in New York City.
According to the indictment, the employee took advantage of her position within the postal service to intercept envelopes containing checks intended for rent payments. Subsequently, she allegedly altered or diverted those funds to deposit them into bank accounts under her control, causing financial losses to multiple victims.
The investigation was developed by the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), in coordination with other federal agencies, after a pattern of rent payments that never reached their recipients was detected. The inquiries allowed the employee to be linked to the alleged mail theft and financial fraud scheme.
The defendant faces several federal charges related to mail theft and fraud, crimes that could carry prison sentences and financial penalties if she is found guilty. At the moment, authorities have not announced a trial date.
The case adds to other recent proceedings for mail theft in the United States, a crime that federal authorities consider a priority due to the impact it generates on citizens, businesses, and institutions that use the postal service for sending documents and payments.
