Almost 300 people killed in Haiti in January of this year, according to a local NGO

Port-au-Prince.- At least 299 people were murdered in January 2026 in Haiti, victims of bullets or clashes, according to a report released this Wednesday by the local NGO Order of Human Rights Defenders (Ordedh), which denounces an “explosion of kidnappings” that defies the authority of the State. “This balance, of unbearable gravity, illustrates a reality in which dying has become a daily risk for all Haitians“, indicated the NGO, which recalled that these 299 truncated lives “are not just statistics, but shattered families and a social fabric that tears a little more each day before the eyes of a traumatized society“. The statistical balance prepared by this local NGO highlights the hegemony of armed groups, in particular the Viv Ansanm coalition, responsible for 42.81% of the registered mortality, according to the report.

“Parallel to this carnage, the kidnapping industry is experiencing a boom that paralyzes the very spirit of the population. Despite repeated announcements and the meager efforts of the Haitian National Police (HNP), kidnapping remains an insurmountable challenge for the institution,” the report indicates.

These data reveal a concentration of deadly violence in the West of the country, specifically where the capital, Port-au-Prince, is located, which alone records 85.28% of the deaths nationwide.

The departments of Centre and Artibonite follow, with 4.35% of the cases each, confirming the spread of insecurity beyond the capital. Also, the humanitarian organization pointed out that the operational results of the Haitian National Police (HNP) “remain vague and very insufficient in the face of the magnitude of the disaster”.

“This inability to stop the kidnappings creates a feeling of total abandonment, in which the State seems to be a spectator of the suffering of its own citizens, delivered to the mercy of unscrupulous predators,” he indicated.
