At least six Colombian airports suffered damage from the 7.4 magnitude earthquake

The Civil Aeronautics reported this Monday that the 7.4 magnitude earthquake recorded in Chocó caused damage to different airports in the country, while technical teams are carrying out inspections.

“Following the earthquake recorded this morning in Colombia, at this moment there are reports of damage at various airports”, reported Aerocivil.

Following the notification, Aerocivil indicated, in its first report, that there are disruptions at the airports in Pereira, Manizales, Quibdo, Armenia, Cartago, and Buenaventura.

“For safety reasons, air operations at these terminals remain suspended until structural damage to the infrastructure is assessed.”

Matecaña Airport, among the affected points

One of the airports where disruptions were reported is the Matecaña International Airport in Pereira. Images released after the earthquake show damage in areas of the terminal and the evacuation of users from the facilities.

The situation in Pereira follows the seismic movement whose epicenter was located in the department of Chocó. The event had a magnitude of 7.4 and a depth of 96 kilometers, according to the updated bulletin cited by the authorities.

Reports on the impact of the earthquake are also known in other cities in the western and central parts of the country. Information regarding the damage remains under update as authorities carry out the respective verifications.

In light of potential disruptions to air operations, the Civil Aeronautics authority recommended that passengers check the status of their flights directly with their airlines and remain attentive to official channels.
